Idukki: Idukki SP R Karupaswami suspended CPO Anas PK, attached to the Karimannoor Police Station, on Tuesday for allegedly leaking details of the RSS-BJP leaders in the district to an SDPI leader.
The incident came to light when Anas’s phone number was found on the mobile phone of a defendant who assaulted KSRTC driver Madhu Sudhan, a Mullaringad resident, for sharing a cartoon about the Prophet Muhammad on Facebook. The attack allegedly perpetrated by SDPI and activists from the Popular Front of India for “blasphemy” took place on 3 December. The driver was brutally assaulted after the vehicle that was traveling with his children was stopped.
In connection with the case, the police arrested four SDPI activists. During the investigation, Anas’s number was found on the defendant’s phone.
According to Thodupuzha deputy SP K Sadan, a detailed investigation revealed that the defendant and the CPO were close friends for the past 11 years, and Anas had provided details of the RSS-BJP leaders from the criminal police records.
After this incident, DSP K Sadan submitted a report to Idukki SP on December 16. According to the report, the SP transferred Anas from the Karimannoor police station to the Idukki police headquarters and suspended him on Tuesday.
DSP K Sadan told TOI: “The police would take department-level action against Anas. His mobile phone has already been seized for further investigation. ”
According to the police, a detailed inspection will be carried out to find the connection between the CPO and the SDPI leader. The police also decided to investigate any connection to the recent incidents and the details leaked by Anas.
