It’s the beginning of a new year, but rumors and phone leaks continue to flood in, and here we are looking at more details that have emerged around Honor’s first foldable phone, the Honor Magic V, which will launch in early 2022.
According to the well-known informant Digital Chat Station on the Chinese social network Weibo (via Phandroid), the next folding smartphone will be powered by the high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset; that’s a pretty bold statement for the phone that investigated will be one of the largest on the market.
That is in line with another leak we saw a few days ago, and it means that the Honor Magic V would likely be the first foldable phone to hit the market with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. The chipset is likely to appear in many of the Android flagships in 2022.
Display, camera, software
We also have some details on the displays, which will apparently feature 120Hz and 90Hz refresh rates. It looks like the 120Hz screen will be the external one (when the phone is closed) and the 90Hz screen will be the largest internal one.
Apparently a drilled hole is in the upper right corner of the internal screen. As for the main camera, it is reportedly directed by a 50MP sensor, while a 66W load is also available to power the foldable phone.
The latest data is that Android 12 will be on board immediately, although the informant adds that these specifications are based on a prototype design that could be changed before the folding sees the light of day. An announcement could arrive earlier this month, though the phone may only be available in China.
Analysis: folding will continue to improve in 2022
Rumors about an Honor foldable phone have been circulating for a few months now, and it’s no wonder another brand is getting involved in a foldable phone market that has so far been led by Samsung, Huawei, and Motorola.
Last year we saw the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 launched by Samsung, showing the two main form factors that are available to consumers: the largest book-shaped fold and the smallest shell-shaped fold. .
The Honor Magic V will be foldable book-style when it appears, and with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 under the hood, it’s likely one of the best foldable phones yet. Samsung will then return with the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Galaxy Z Flip 4.
Going forward, the Google Pixel Fold and a folding iPhone should appear in no time, giving us even more folding to choose from, and we expect the engineering quality in terms of hinges and displays to continue to improve as well.
