Xavi unveiled as Barcelona’s new coach

A leaked WhatsApp conversation revealed that Dani Alves attempted to return to Barcelona after his Champions League loss to Liverpool in 2019.

The Brazilian became new manager Xavi Hernández’s first signing in November, although his registration will only be processed in time for him to make his second debut this month.

However, the full-back tried to return to the Camp Nou two and a half years earlier when he sent a WhatsApp message to the then president of the club, Josep Maria Bartomeu, claiming that they were ‘needed’.

The message came after the Blaugrana’s humiliating defeat in the Champions League semi-finals against the Reds when they blew a three-goal lead in the first leg to go down 4-0 at Anfield.

Alves had left the club three years earlier and went on to stints at Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, which he later left in 2019.

Dani Alves rejoined Barcelona after five years away this season

However, the highly decorated winger did not return to Barça that year and instead returned to his native Brazil to sign for Sao Paulo.

However, now the leaked conversation has emerged between Alves and Bartomeu, who resigned from his position in October 2020.

Alves wrote: “Mr. President, is everything okay? I want to go back there, I want to go home and I want to play the 2022 World Cup as a Barça player!

“Let’s put our pride aside, we need each other and we know it!”

In response, Bartomeu urged Alves to speak with the club’s then-sporting director, Eric Abidal, to work on his return to the club, which would also require the approval of the first-team coach, who was Ernesto Valverde at the time.

Bartomeu replied: “Hello Dani, coming back is not a problem, but that must be in agreement with the Barça coaching staff.”

“Have you talked to Abidal?” A big hug. Barto.

Both Abidal and Valverde ruled out the return of Alves and now the original conversation has come to light, with Alves responding to the leaked message.

He wrote this Friday on his Twitter account: “For those for whom Barça is important, we do whatever it takes … but life knows what each one deserves.

“Sorry … Thank you (along with a prayer emoji).”

The 38-year-old was recently a VIP guest in Barça’s Champions League clash against Dynamo Kiev and will wear the Blaugrana jersey again after five and a half years away from the club.

Since Alves left Barça in 2016, the club had spent more than 100 million euros in transfers to try to replace the Brazilian.

The Blaugrana had signed five players at the position – Aleix Vidal, Nelson Semedo, Moussa Wague, Emerson Royal and Sergino Dest – with midfielder Sergi Roberto converted to play at the position in subsequent years.

The Brazilian winger won 23 outstanding titles during his first spell at the Camp Nou, which lasted between 2008 and 2016, a golden age for the Catalan giants.

He subsequently left the club to join Juventus, where he spent a season before spending two years at Paris Saint-Germain and then returning to Brazil to play for Sao Paulo.

Alves became a free agent in September and had been looking for a new club ever since.
