Back in August, Wizards of the Coast announced each of the Premier sets coming to MTG in 2022 during the 2021 Magic Showcase. Since then, we’ve had information about the Unfinity “joke set” and a whole new format. has come to MTG: Arena, we haven’t heard much about upcoming Premier sets.
Thanks to some leaks that started popping up on social media yesterday, we can now see some new art and product packaging from the first of the upcoming sets, Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. Neon Dynasty won’t be released until February 18, 2022, but in the meantime we can ogle some of this beautiful promo art.
Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty WPN Store Poster
For each upcoming set, Wizards of the Coast distributes posters to local game stores that are part of the Wizards Play Network. Now, we have a chance to see the Neon Dynasty poster much earlier than expected. Featuring a colorful character with a pink accent and full samurai armor, the poster has players excited for the return of the Samurai creature type to Magic.
We may also see the return of related mechanics from the original Kamigawa block, such as Bushido and Ninjutsu.
We don’t know if the set will actually include one or both of the classic mechanics, or if it will have entirely new mechanics. However, it seems clear with this kind of promo art that Samurai will be returning to MTG in some form and will likely appear heavily in Neon Dynasty.
Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty Art and Packaging Pack
Leaked from Amazon, the box art from Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty Bundle shows a female figure dressed in golden armor. On Reddit, many gamers speculate that the character shown in this art is actually The Wanderer, a mysterious character who first appeared in War of the Spark.
We know almost nothing about The Wanderer, but Wizards teased early on that we would eventually learn more about his character. While there’s no confirmation that this character is her, it seems likely that Neon Dynasty will finally reveal some details about the shadowy, nameless planeswalker.
Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty Collector Booster Display Art and Packaging
Finally, we have a (slightly grainy) image of the art and packaging that the Neon Dynasty collector’s envelope boxes will represent. It’s a bit difficult to see in the image, but the art appears to depict a samurai-like robotic creature riding what appears to be a motorcycle or similar vehicle.
The Neon Dynasty story takes place thousands of years in the future since we last visited Kamigawa’s plane, so the motorcycle makes sense given that the Wizards has sparked a cyberpunk vibe. Crazy, high-tech machines are nothing new to Magic, just look at Mirrodin. Still, some gamers may find the futuristic aesthetic somewhat off-putting.
We still have a long way to go before the official Neon Dynasty spoilers begin, but this sweet art could help keep our cravings at bay while we wait, or maybe it will feed them more than before! We will stay tuned for any additional information regarding Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty and all other upcoming MTG products.
