PUNE At least eight leak incidents were reported from the Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL) pipelines in the Pimple Gurav area in 2021.
On December 22, a tragedy was averted at the Ram Krishna restaurant when a gas pipeline was damaged near parked vehicles. People found out after the gas spread through the area and caused panic among neighbors.
“Gas leak incidents have become a regular business at Pimple Gurav and when we complain to MNGL or Smart City officials, the blame game begins. The incidents that occurred during the Ganesh festival and in July were the most important, ”said Devyani Bharambe, a resident of Shri Krishna chowk.
Another resident, Vikas Gaikwad said: “The officials do not take problems seriously because they have not learned from the mistakes of the past. If such activities are not stopped, we plan to raise the matter with the police, as we do not get an adequate response from officials and the gas company. “
Smart City project work has been going on for the past year and a half, yet Covid-19 has severely impacted work that is still progressing at a snail’s pace. Pimple Saudagar, Pimple Gurav and Wakad have been included in the Smart City territorial development project. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 344.54 million.
“We are not responsible for the damage that has been caused by the pipeline leak at Pimple Gurav, people who are digging roads must remain vigilant as we have placed route markers everywhere the pipeline passes from. Such incidents occur due to the negligent attitude of the workers who are doing these jobs, ”an MNGL official said, requesting anonymity.
“Whenever a gas leak incident occurs, our mobile van makes sure the pipeline is restored as soon as possible. Our contact number for the helpline is written on the route marker, ”the official added.
A smart city official said: “Few incidents occurred due to human error. We are taking precautions and will take details of the officers who are in charge during the incident. “
“We are planning to place barricades near the MNGL gas route marker in advance before excavation work begins to alert workers,” the official added.
